McLean School takes pride in being a community of individuals working in an environment of trust. All members of McLean’s community are expected to show respect for the campus and the people who comprise our school by demonstrating honesty, courtesy, and appropriate behavior. In addition, students are expected to be polite and courteous, to respect themselves, as well as their peers.
Abuse
Students may not engage in any activity that may endanger their own or another’s health, safety, or welfare. Verbal, physical or sexual abuse by or toward any member of McLean School community will not be tolerated and will be thoroughly investigated.
Harassment
Harassment will not be tolerated in any form. Harassment can be defined as any unwanted or uninvited behavior that may interfere with a person’s participation in the community. This includes, but is not limited to, bullying, teasing, taunting, discrimination, and any form of sexual harassment (verbal or physical). Any individual harassing another will face serious consequences.
Racist behavior divides a community and will not be tolerated. Racist behavior can be defined as any word, action or attitude that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive school environment. This includes derogatory remarks, offensive gestures and language, racial slurs and discrimination. Anyone participating in racist behavior will face serious consequences. Any student who believes he/she has been subject to or has witnessed any form of racist behavior must report that behavior to any administrator or school counselor.
Personal Integrity
A school/community can only exist if there is trust among its members. Honesty is a primary value of McLean School. Stealing is a violation of the rights of others. Lying is a violation of trust. Neither lying nor stealing can be tolerated at McLean. Students who lie or steal will be sent to the Honor Committee to determine the consequences.
Copying/Cheating/Plagiarism
Offering as one’s own work the ideas, words, papers or exams of another is plagiarism. The copying of another’s work word for word, without appropriate citation is misrepresentation. Students are reminded that paraphrasing of another’s work also must be accompanied with appropriate citation. Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated at McLean and will be treated in a serious fashion. Students who cheat are in violation of the Honor Code, and will be sent to the Honor Committee to determine their consequences.
Respect for Property/Environment
Students will be held responsible for any deliberate destruction or defacing of school property. This includes but is not limited to, bathrooms, classrooms, lounges, hallways, desks, lockers, athletic equipment, library books, resource materials, as well as outdoor areas. A student will be asked to make full restitution for the damaged/destroyed item(s). Behavior in the student lounge must be respectful of others. Students are expected to clean up after themselves and leave the lounge in a clean and proper manner.
