An exciting week is planned to celebrate Foreign Language Week. Students will participate in a variety of activities and the hot lunch menu has been planned with an international flair. (Click here for more information.) Families are invited to participate in the McLean International Night.
On Wednesday, February 22, 2006, a professional West-African dance ensemble will perform for the Middle and Upper School.
On Thursday, February 23, the duo Cantaré will perform for the Lower School in the APR. This group creates Latin American children’s music that incorporates traditional styles, such as merengue, swing, baiao and candombe.
Also on Thursday, February 23, the Upper School will have a guest speaker, Dr. Momoudou Darboe, from Shepherd University in West Virginia. Dr. Darbo, Chair of the Sociology and Geography Department, will talk about the struggles that African youth face when becoming students in the United States.
On Friday, February 24, Lower School students will be welcomed into the APR to an imaginary “feria de pueblo” (small town carnival). There will be several game stations, staffed by teachers, with Middle and Upper School students helping.
In addition, on February 23 at 7:00pm, McLean will host International Night. On display will be student art working and essays telling the story of their family traditions and history as well class projects that celebrate knowledge of other cultures and family traditions.
Joseph Lekuton, the Maasai warrior, will speak and sign his book, Facing The Lion and the Floyd Project Dance Company will perform.
Families are invited to join International Night, our celebration of family traditions, by bringing a dish that represents their family heritage. If your family’s last name starts with A-M, please bring a main dish and if your family’s last name the starts with N-Z, please bring any side dish.
