The fourth grade class of Mrs. Claunts and Mrs. Fisher celebrated the Indian holiday Diwali on November 14. Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights in India and is a lunar holiday celebrated in October or November. Lights from oil lamps are used to decorate houses to remember the story of the god Ram bringing home his wife Sita after saving her from the demon Ravan. The students dressed in clothing from India and performed a folk dance using rhythm sticks that they had decorated in art class. Ms. Nomita Advani, Lower School Art teacher, taught the students the dance from her homeland. After the dance performance, the students presented a PowerPoint show about India and Diwali for their parents and shared sweet Diwali treats with them.
