SAT/ACT Booster Classes

Jill Broder’s Tutoring Center @ McLean School

Math Booster for the SAT/ACT is a great opportunity for students entering grades 10 and 11 who want to strengthen their math skills. Content will include general problem solving, algebra, geometry and higher-level math. The course is individualized, with a multi-sensory approach. The focus is on teaching the material for long-term retention. Study strategies, specific to standardized tests, are practiced. The course gives the student the skills and confidence necessary for the SAT/ACT.

Vocabulary Booster for the SAT/ACT is designed for students entering grades 10 and 11 who want to strengthen their vocabulary levels. This course uses the acclaimed book “Hot Words for the SAT” which uses memory strategies that “stick” through association, picture clues and mnemonics. The students will study a systematic approach to learn and recall vocabulary words and definitions. Students are encouraged to take this course to strengthen their reading skills and to learn upper level vocabulary presented on the SAT/ACT.

Reading Comprehension Booster for the SAT/ACT is recommended for students entering grades 10 and 11 who would benefit from extra practice. The curriculum focuses on reading comprehension instruction and not particularly on test taking strategies geared for the SAT or ACT. To that end, the course is self-paced and individualized. A diagnostic test is given to determine the student’s reading and skills levels in vocabulary, as well as in comprehension. Questioning and pre-reading techniques are taught while the students’ reading materials gradually increase in difficulty. This course will improve the student’s reading skills and knowledge for the SAT/ACT verbal section.

Booster for Increased Reading Speed on Standardized Tests is recommended for student’s wanting to increase their reading and comprehension speed. This course uses the EyeQ program and the Jamestown Reading Improvement Series. Part of this program is computer based which aids in helping students stay focused. This program is self-paced and available for all Upper School students at any reading level.
